The Sleep Charity is a small charity supporting those with sleep issues. Research suggests that around 40% of the population will have a sleep issue at some stage. The charity recently launched a manifesto in the House of Commons to raise awareness about the huge impact sleep deprivation can have on mental, physical and emotional well being and calling for the government to invest in support.
Vicki Dawson, CEO and Founder of the charity says,“Working in the sector myself I understand the stresses that are faced by staff. It is incredibly difficult in the current economic climate to secure funding and workloads are often high as the public rely on charities more and more. It is these things that can adversely affect our sleep.”
Sleep deprivation can impact on every area of your life from relationships to being able to carry out your job. There are many reasons why sleep issues can affect us including psychological causes such as stress and anxiety through to physical and lifestyle issues. Tiredness that goes on for a period of time can affect your ability to enjoy life and is a common reason for people to visit their GP.
There are things that you may try yourself in order to improve your sleep. Firstly try to work out what may be causing the sleep issue before you decide on any strategies. Consider any recent events that may have contributed such as a bereavement or house move. Physical illness can also cause tiredness, it is a good idea to speak to your GP to rule out any underlying reasons including conditions such as anaemia and sleep apnoea.
